Kihnu museum permanent exhibition

FRONT ROOM

The front room offers visitors a general overview of the island, its population and buildings. Here you can rest your feet, drink a cup of tea, browse the museum shop of handicrafts and books, and children can play with plush toys on the soft carpet, which is shaped like Kihnu island.

The multimedia in this room showcases a beautiful background: old clips from TV and film programs are shown, which showcase the island's nature and residents' daily life.

The ticket desk and the museum shop are also located here in the front room.

CHILDREN'S ROOM

In the room depicting children's life, the multimedia exhibition is the most interactive: on the touch screen, visitors can play a fun quiz, choose different kihnu lullabies to listen to, and view different Kihnu children's games, dolls, school supplies and more.

ROOM DEDICATED TO IMPORTANT KIHNU PEOPLE

In this room, movie clips with audio run non-stop on the screen. This room is dedicated to the imporant people who have had an impact throughout Kihnu history. Visitors can discover more about persons like the famous silversmith Peeter Rooslaid, who made beautiful handmade silver brooches and other handicraft. Or Theodor Saar, who was a teacher and notable violin player.

MEN'S ROOM

The men's room, dedicated to marine and seal hunting life has a very special floor that represents a white ice field with an ice crack within it. In this room the sound of the sea plays in the background. If visiting the museum with a local guide, here they can intervene by choosing different sailor songs to listen to or sing themselves. Hidden within the floor is a projector that displays images of marine life from under the sea surface. This floor is one of the most popular spots with children, as they love to watch the fishes swim by. If you're lucky you might even catch glimpse of a seal.

WOMEN'S ROOM

The women's room is dedicated to handicraft, wedding and home traditions. The entire room is exploding with beautiful, rich handicraft.
Wedding traditions, along with the preparation of a bride's dowry chest, is a central theme. The screen complements the theme with video clips of Kihnu weddings.

In the next exhibition room, there is a barn showcase with wood chests full of traditional handicraft and a pantry with all kinds of utensils and tools needed for farming. Meanwhile, the screen shows various clips of field and meadow work, all portraying the farm life of Kihnu islanders.

PAINTING ROOM

The permanent exhibition ends with the painting room. Many sailors' main hobby back in the day was painting. This was done on a ship, for example, while sailors waited for the right wind to continue their journey. The pictures in Kihnu Museum's collections are displayed on the walls, and more images of paintings are displayed on a slide show screen.

VISITING EXHIBITIONS ROOM

The room for visiting exhibitions showcases temporary exhibitions throughout the year and is the room, where museum events take place. Here you can see various exhibitions related to Kihnu or other interesting topics. Concerts, presentations and workshops are also often held here.
